When to change your car tires on your Kia

How do you know when it’s time to replace your tires?

Tires are one of the most critical components of your car, directly affecting safety, handling, and overall driving performance. Knowing when to change your car tires on your Kia helps you continue to enjoy a smooth and safe ride. So, how do you know when it’s time to replace your tires, and what’s the general rule of thumb for how long they last? Read on with Matt Castrucci Kia of Dayton, OH, to find out.

Signs that it’s time to replace your tires

  1. Tread depth wear: The tread on your tires plays a vital role in maintaining traction, especially in wet or slippery conditions. Over time, this tread wears down, reducing your tire’s grip on the road. A quick and simple way to check the tread depth is the penny test.
  2. Visible cracks or bulges: Tires naturally age, and as they do, you may notice cracks in the sidewalls or even bulges. Cracks indicate that the rubber is drying out and becoming more prone to failure, while bulges could suggest internal damage. Both are red flags.
  3. Frequent air pressure issues: If you’re regularly refilling your tires with air, it could be a sign that they’re leaking due to wear, punctures, or bead failure. Tires that can’t hold air properly can lead to unsafe driving conditions and must be inspected as soon as possible.
  4. Vibration while driving: While some vibration is normal on rough roads, excessive or unusual vibrations can be a sign of tire damage or imbalance. They might indicate tires that are worn unevenly or have sustained internal damage. If you feel significant vibrations, have your tires inspected.
  5. Uneven tread wear: If you notice that one area of the tire is more worn than another, this could indicate alignment issues, improper inflation, or suspension problems. Uneven tread wear can affect the tire’s ability to grip the road properly and should not be ignored.

How long do tires typically last?

While the lifespan of your Kia car’s tires depends on various factors like driving habits, road conditions, and maintenance, a general rule of thumb is that tires last between 30,000 and 60,000 miles. However, tires should be inspected annually once they reach about three years of age. Most manufacturers recommend replacing tires at least every six years, regardless of mileage, as the rubber naturally deteriorates over time.

Tips for prolonging tire life

  • Rotate your tires regularly to promote even wear across all four tires.
  • Keep your tires properly inflated to the recommended pressure level.
  • Check your alignment periodically, as misalignment can cause uneven wear.
  • Drive smoothly by avoiding hard braking or acceleration, which can lead to wear.
